Week 10

I first off would like to discuss last week's proofreading of our article reviews. I think it was very helpful and beneficial to not only proofread papers from other members of class but also to get an idea of what information they were utilizing and the organization style of their papers. I am glad that some class time was devoted to working on our projects. I think it would be helpful and beneficial for all to have more class time devoted to the project. I don’t think many graduate professors take into account that most of us work full time jobs, commute and lack a social life as is. With that being said, it’s nearly impossible for 5 group members to be able to coordinate a time to meet outside of the 3 hour allotted class time. One of my biggest fears is to graduate with my master’s and not find a job that pays enough or is challenging enough. I think a big area of underemployment for myself is was not being able to use the skills that I had learned in college and was so eager to demonstrate.

This week’s reading of chapter 10 was very informative and dealt with career development in post secondary educational institutions. One of the topics that Brown (2012) covered was the issue of underemployment. I can relate to this phenomenon. After graduation from undergrad it took several months for me to find a TSS position that required me to use my bachelor’s degree. I was working as a cashier with a bachelor’s degree and I felt that I would never find a job. I was educated making only $7.25 an hour. I still have a few friends that specialized in education that have yet to find teaching positions and the one is scooping ice-cream in the meantime. I think it’s scary facing the fact the people have all this student loan debt but can’t seem to find jobs with the degree they went to school for.
Granello (2001) made it easier for myself to review our articles, I know am aware what constitutes the graduate writing level. I was however confused after reading the article several times. After applying Bloom’s taxonomy to our peer’s articles I was able to gain a better understand of what exactly each stage of the taxonomy was looking for.
