Chapters 13 and 18 and Granello Article

The Granello article was very accurate based on my undergrad experience and my lack of ability to write a literature review. I was asked to write a literature review in one of my classes, but I was never taught how to evaluate the information that I was reading in order to create a well-written review. Bloom’s Taxonomy is created in such a way that it makes it easier for me to understand how a well-written literature review should look and sound. I like how each skill is a stepping-stone to the next skill and how the skills in Bloom’s Taxonomy were explained in detail because it helps me get an idea of where I am currently (Granello, 2001).  In class, we applied Bloom’s Taxonomy to the different literature reviews that we read. We also discussed the importance of writing program goals clearly so that they are measureable and obtainable for the student (Notes, 11-6).
Chapter eighteen talked about the trends and issues that will impact career counseling/development (Brown, 2012). In reading this information, I came to the realization that many opportunities for job openings and descriptions are going to be on the Internet (Brown, 2012). I feel that this could limit those who are in the lower SES because they may not have computer access readily available to them. Some may have to find transportation to a local library or do things the old-fashioned way and look in the local paper. On the other hand, I think that the Internet has made and will continue to make job searching much easier with programs such as O*NET (Brown, 2012). The amount of information that this program provides about careers is easy to access and is laid out in a way that many people will understand., so it makes it appealing.
I found chapter thirteen to be kind of discouraging because it seemed to make me feel as though I am attending school for no reason. Although there is a number of factors that contribute to underemployment, there are also many people who have a degree who are not able to use the skills that they acquired (Brown, 2012). There are numerous programs and centers for people to go to where they can receive career help. There have also been laws put in place to create more equality in the work place, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (Brown, 2012).  People are unable to predict what will happen in the future, so in order to make things better, such as discrimination, it has to first be recognized and acted upon.
I was able to connect the material from chapter 13 and chapter 18 because the trends that are occurring now can be and hopefully will be solved in the future in order to create a better working environment for all. The hope would be that as problems arise, they are addressed as they have been in the past. Creating new programs and performing evaluations on them will be ideal components of a successful future.
