Week 4

In my blog this week I will be connecting and discussing aspects of the Solingen (2011) article.  I could connect with this article like I have seen others have as well.  Many individuals go through some kind or indecision in their career development, whether it be at a young age when individuals want to be like their role model or an adolescent that want to makes a lot of money.  There is a lot of indecisiveness when making career plans especially when there is not a lot of guidance.  I too have faced some indecision in my career path.  I knew and know that I wanted to get into a field that I could be “hand-on” and actively helping people.  I cannot see myself sitting in an office day after day doing paperwork or computer generated work.  After I obtain my master’s degree and licensure I am still not quite sure what I want to do.  I think that I would like to go into some kind of outpatient therapy or perhaps a program that works with troubled or juvenile youth.

In the article there were many different aspects of career indecision that was discussed.  Solingen (2011) discussed other research indicating that undecided students are less accomplished and mature than decided students.  I do not really agree with this statement because students that are undecided about careers or other fields of study are not less accomplished.  I think that they understand that there are many different fields and options in the world and are not fully educated in all the areas.  I also think that because they are aware of different options they are just indecisive about what best fits their needs, has meaning, and plays to their strengths.  I also think that those that are decided have done more research in their area of interest or have looked into different areas that can play to their strengths and can have meaning in their lives.

I also thought it was interesting that Solingen (2011) mentioned that indecision is part of the normal experience that occurs when people are about to lose their place and then they transform themselves and forge a new identity.  I would agree that when we reach an indecision it is normal and we are trying to find where we belong and what we should be doing that will have meaning for us.  I also think that in this process we are trying to create a new part of our identity.
